Brandy Pritchett on April 23, 2009 10:00 AMSix African American 9th grade ladies from Kalamazoo Central High School participated in a six week group that allowed for critical discussions around love, lust, and sex as well as the importance of respecting yourself and your body. The group allowed for young ladies to speak openly and honestly about relationship fears and struggles. Students provided feedback about their group experience: “This is something that every girl should participate in” – S.D. age, 15 “ [The group] was really fun. It made things easier to talk about especially if you can’t talk to your parents” – A.J. age, 15 Seven students participate in a 10 week focus group that allows for critical evaluation of Hip Hop media. Students get an opportunity to watch a documentary and engage in critical dialogue about such images and messages. Students are then encouraged to develop a final product that represented their journey in the group and new found understanding of self in Hip Hop. Students provided feedback about their group experience: “I wouldn’t change anything about the group except make it longer” – Anonymous “I liked the group. It let me open up and say things that I didn’t think I could share” - Anonymous
