Walter Malone was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived in a single parent household with his mother and older brother. Growing up in the inner city was a very difficult feat for Walter. Through his perseverance and passion for success, he was able to complete high school and go on to college. Mr. Malone graduated from Western Michigan University in April of 2005 with a bachelor degree in Business Management.
He later held the position of Executive Manager at Target Corporation for two years before going back to school to pursue his Masters degree in Educational Leadership. After the first year of his program, Walter was offered the Program Coordinator position with the Trio Upward Bound Program. Upon the completion of his degree, he was promoted to the Assistant Director position in which he currently performs a number of duties such as recruiting, programming for educational and social needs, mentoring, developing and administering assessment, and assisting in grant writing.
In addition to Walter’s profession career he also serves as the advisor for the Young Black Males Support Network on Western Michigan Campus and mentors several undergraduate students. Mr. Malone is currently pursuing his Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology, with hopes of one day starting a practice in Family and Marriage Counseling. He wishes to continue his work with the Future 4 Teens team throughout the duration of his professional career, and perhaps give back by becoming a professor. He is very passionate about serving the youth populations and says he will continue to work intensively with adolescents to promote and motivate academic excellence.
Through the future 4 teens program, community service, and motivational speaking, Walter’s hope is to produce a positive impact in the lives of young people so that they may do the same in return. Walter states that his motivation is fueled by his experiences in the inner city of Detroit and lack of young Black educated men represented within his community. His passion is to help young students understand and maximize their potential to be successful. “It is essential”, he says, “that we as young professionals repair the foundations of today that were once built for us, so that our youth are able to build stronger foundations for tomorrow.” |
